Frequently Asked Questions

How does an eSIM work in Sri Lanka?

An eSIM in Sri Lanka works by connecting your device to local mobile networks such as Dialog Axiata, Mobitel, and Airtel without needing a physical SIM card. Once you purchase and activate your eSIM plan, it downloads a digital profile that gives you instant access to 4G/LTE data across the country. This means you can get connected before you even land in Colombo, making it the most convenient option for travelers visiting Sri Lanka.

Is my phone compatible with eSIM for travel to Sri Lanka?

Most modern smartphones support eSIM technology, including iPhone XS and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, and Google Pixel 3 and above. Before purchasing an eSIM for Sri Lanka, check that your device is carrier-unlocked and eSIM-compatible by going to your phone's settings. You can also verify compatibility by dialing *#06# to see if an EID (Embedded Identity Document) number appears on your device.

What is the network coverage and internet speed like with an eSIM in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka offers solid 4G/LTE coverage in major cities like Colombo, Kandy, Galle, and along popular tourist routes. Dialog Axiata has the widest network coverage across the island, including rural areas and hill country destinations like Ella and Nuwara Eliya. In remote areas or national parks like Yala, coverage may drop to 3G, but overall, most travelers find the data speeds sufficient for navigation, social media, and video calls.

How do I activate an eSIM before traveling to Sri Lanka?

Activating an eSIM for Sri Lanka is simple and can be done before your departure. After purchasing your plan, you'll receive a QR code via email - scan it in your phone's cellular settings to install the eSIM profile. Most providers recommend installing the eSIM while connected to Wi-Fi, and the data plan typically activates automatically once your device connects to a Sri Lankan network upon arrival.

How much does an eSIM for Sri Lanka cost compared to international roaming?

An eSIM data plan for Sri Lanka typically costs between $5 and $25 depending on data allowance and validity period, making it significantly cheaper than international roaming charges. Traditional roaming with most carriers can cost $10–$15 per day or more, meaning a week-long trip could easily exceed $70–$100. Using an eSIM can save travelers up to 90% on data costs while enjoying reliable local network speeds throughout Sri Lanka.

Can I use WhatsApp and Google Maps with an eSIM in Sri Lanka?

Yes, an eSIM in Sri Lanka provides full access to all your favorite apps including WhatsApp, Google Maps, Uber, and social media platforms. Data-only eSIM plans are ideal for using messaging apps to stay in touch with family and for navigating Sri Lanka's scenic routes between destinations. To save data, consider downloading offline Google Maps for Sri Lanka before your trip and using Wi-Fi calling for longer voice conversations.

When does my plan start?

This plan: On first use abroad. Validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a network - install before you fly, pay nothing until you land.

"On first use abroad" plans start when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, so you can install them before you travel. "When installed" plans start the moment the eSIM is added to your phone, so install those on arrival.
