Frequently Asked Questions

How does an eSIM work in Mauritius?

An eSIM in Mauritius works by connecting your device to local mobile networks such as Emtel, my.t (Mauritius Telecom), or CHILI without needing a physical SIM card. Once you purchase and activate your Mauritius eSIM plan, a digital profile is downloaded to your device, giving you instant access to mobile data. This means you can get connected as soon as you land at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport without visiting a store.

Which phones and devices are compatible with eSIM in Mauritius?

Most modern smartphones support eSIM technology, including iPhone XS and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, Google Pixel 3 and above, and select iPad and Apple Watch models. Before purchasing an eSIM for Mauritius, ensure your device is carrier-unlocked and eSIM-capable by checking your phone's settings or contacting your home carrier. Dual-SIM devices allow you to keep your home number active while using a local Mauritius data plan simultaneously.

What is the network coverage and data speed like with an eSIM in Mauritius?

Mauritius offers solid 4G LTE coverage across most of the island, including popular tourist areas like Grand Baie, Port Louis, Flic-en-Flac, and resort zones along the coast. Leading networks like Emtel and my.t provide reliable connectivity with download speeds typically ranging from 20–50 Mbps. Coverage may be slightly weaker in remote mountainous areas like Black River Gorges, but overall, you can expect a smooth browsing and streaming experience throughout your trip.

How do I activate my eSIM before traveling to Mauritius?

Activating your Mauritius eSIM is straightforward - after purchasing your plan online, you'll receive a QR code via email that you scan in your device's cellular settings. Most providers recommend installing the eSIM profile before departure and activating data roaming once you arrive in Mauritius. The entire setup process typically takes less than 5 minutes, and no physical SIM swap or store visit is required.

Is an eSIM cheaper than international roaming in Mauritius?

Yes, using an eSIM in Mauritius is significantly cheaper than traditional international roaming, which can cost $10–$20 per MB with some home carriers. eSIM data plans for Mauritius typically start from just a few dollars for 1 GB and go up to affordable unlimited options for longer stays. By switching to a local eSIM data plan, travelers can save up to 90% on data costs compared to standard roaming charges while enjoying faster local network speeds.

How much data do I need for a trip to Mauritius?

For a typical 7-day vacation in Mauritius, most travelers find that 3–5 GB of data is sufficient for navigation, social media, messaging, and uploading photos from stunning beaches like Le Morne and Île aux Cerfs. If you plan to use video calls, stream content, or work remotely from your resort, consider a 10 GB or unlimited plan for worry-free connectivity. Using Wi-Fi at your hotel for heavy downloads and keeping your eSIM data for on-the-go use is a smart way to optimize your data consumption.

When does my plan start?

This plan: On first use abroad. Validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a network - install before you fly, pay nothing until you land.

"On first use abroad" plans start when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, so you can install them before you travel. "When installed" plans start the moment the eSIM is added to your phone, so install those on arrival.
