Frequently Asked Questions

How does an eSIM work in Greenland?

An eSIM in Greenland works by connecting your device to local mobile networks like Tusass (formerly TELE Greenland), the primary telecommunications provider in the country. Once you purchase and activate your eSIM plan before or during your trip, it downloads a digital SIM profile directly to your device - no physical SIM card needed. This gives you mobile data access in populated areas across Greenland, making it ideal for travelers exploring this remote Arctic destination.

Is my phone compatible with eSIM for traveling to Greenland?

Most modern smartphones support eSIM technology, including iPhone XS and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, and Google Pixel 3 and above. Before purchasing an eSIM for Greenland, check your device settings to confirm eSIM capability and ensure your phone is carrier-unlocked. You can usually verify this by going to your phone's cellular or mobile data settings and looking for an option to add an eSIM or digital SIM plan.

What is the network coverage like for eSIM users in Greenland?

Network coverage in Greenland is primarily provided by Tusass, which offers 4G/LTE connectivity in major towns like Nuuk, Ilulissat, Sisimiut, and Qaqortoq. However, due to Greenland's vast and sparsely populated landscape, coverage outside of settlements can be limited or nonexistent. Travelers venturing into remote fjords, ice cap areas, or smaller villages should plan for periods without connectivity and download offline maps and resources in advance.

How do I activate my eSIM before traveling to Greenland?

Activating your eSIM for Greenland is typically a straightforward process that can be completed before you depart. After purchasing your eSIM plan, you'll receive a QR code via email - simply scan it in your phone's cellular settings to download the eSIM profile. It's recommended to activate your eSIM while connected to Wi-Fi at home, and then enable data roaming in your settings so the eSIM connects automatically when you arrive in Greenland.

How much does an eSIM for Greenland cost compared to international roaming?

An eSIM data plan for Greenland is significantly cheaper than traditional international roaming, which can cost $10–$20 per MB with many carriers. eSIM plans for Greenland typically range from $10 to $50 depending on the data allowance and validity period, offering far better value for travelers. By using an eSIM instead of roaming, you can save up to 90% on mobile data costs while staying connected during your Arctic adventure.

Can I use an eSIM for calls and texts in Greenland or just data?

Most travel eSIM plans for Greenland are data-only, meaning they provide mobile internet access but not traditional voice calls or SMS. However, with a data connection you can easily make calls and send messages using VoIP apps like WhatsApp, Skype, FaceTime, and Zoom. If you need a local Greenland phone number for receiving calls, consider supplementing your eSIM with a local SIM from Tusass, though for most travelers a data-only eSIM plan is the most convenient and cost-effective solution.

When does my plan start?

This plan: On first use abroad. Validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a network - install before you fly, pay nothing until you land.

"On first use abroad" plans start when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, so you can install them before you travel. "When installed" plans start the moment the eSIM is added to your phone, so install those on arrival.
